Geologist graduated from the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1983, with a Masters degree in Remote Sensing from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in 1987, and a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Arizona, USA, in 1997. He is a researcher at Embrapa Cerrados, developing research on optical and radar remote sensing in the fields of agriculture and the environment, with an emphasis on the Cerrado and Amazon biomes. He is a permanent member of the graduate programs in Applied Geosciences at the University of Brasília (UnB), Environmental Sciences at UnB, and Modeling in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the State University of Feira de Santana. He serves on the editorial boards of the journals Sociedade Natureza, Revista Brasileira de Cartografia, and Boletim de Ciências Geodésicas. From 2010 to 2021, he was seconded to IBAMA in Brasília, where he served as Head of the Remote Sensing Center. He was a member of the international calibration and validation committee for data from the Japanese radar satellite ALOS-2 (20132017) and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the MapBiomas project and of the Fiscal Council of Selper Brasil.
