• What is the Amazon Summit?

The Amazon Summit on August 8-9, in Belém, Pará, Brazil, is an event that will bring together heads of state of the eight countries that are members of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO): Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.

The meeting intends to start a new stage in cooperation among the countries that host the biome through the adoption of a shared policy for the sustainable development of the region. The Summit is going to define a commitment to cooperation for the sustainable development of the Amazon region to be undertaken by those countries, by resuming regional dialogue and strengthening relations between governmental and civil organizations of the participating nations.

    Summit preparations

In the days leading up to the Summit, between August 4 and 6, Belém do Pará will host different initiatives like seminars, debates, exhibits and cultural events, with the aim of providing input for the elaboration of new strategies for the region. Such initiatives will comprise what has been called the Amazonian Dialogues, a forum with government and civil society representatives that will elaborate a participatory proposal based on the interests of the communities and peoples of the region.

  • Research and technologies for the biome

    Embrapa at the Amazon Dialogues

Given its history of studying and developing solutions for the biome, Embrapa will participate in the discussions, presentations and proposals that involve scientific work in the region. Embrapa has been working in the Amazon region for decades with a focus on new development models, which include reducting deforestation and environmental degradation, sustainability in agricultural and forestry production, and improved welfare for Amazonian populations.

The nine Embrapa research centers located in the Brazilian Amazon region will directly participate in the preparatory event for the Summit, the Amazon Dialogues, as well as the corporation's Executive Board. All other Embrapa research centers that have technologies or solutions related to the biome will also support the event.

  • Embrapa's research in the Amazon region

Embrapa's research projects that directly relate to the biome are organized into the Amazon Portfolio, which currently has 64 ongoing projects and 238 researchers directly involved. They have raised a total of R$15.4 million in funds to be used by 2026 (63% from Embrapa and 37% from external sources).

The areas covered by Embrapa in the Amazon region include the bioeconomy, especially through the use of regional bioassets as inputs for products focused on the agrochemical, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food sectors.

Embrapa also works with challenges related to:

    • Adding value to products from the Amazon biodiversity (oils, extracts, essences, fruits, roots, plant fats...).
    • Feasibility of the transition from low-profitability production systems wth high environmental impact to intensive and sustainable production systems.
    • Recovery of degraded and deforested areas.
    • Increased traceability in sustainable forest management systems.
    • Informing public policy to overcome technological bottlenecks in the region; and others.
